Depiction of a medically used extension sleeve (girl catcher)

An extension sleeve in medicine, also known as a joke item, girl catcher , farmer catcher , magical thimbles or finger trap , is a device with the help of which it is possible to fix outstretched fingers.

history

The “girl catcher” was initially a joke article made from palm leaves, which was already known and sold in the second half of the 19th century.

In February 1870, Dr. Steinberger, ordaining doctor in the Rudolfsspital in Vienna, the K. k. Society of Doctors of the discovery of his aspirant (doctoral student) Schmall, who “got the idea” to use this joke article for the extension of extremities, which is more effective than the use of extension bandages. The principle was adapted for use in surgery and was known as "Schmall's braid" as early as 1873.

construction

The extension sleeve is a tube made of a braid that is closed at one end and open at the other. The braid is made of bast or plastic and is attached at one end to a cylindrical end piece that is provided with a hook.

functionality

functionality

If you push an object with a suitable or slightly larger diameter into the extension sleeve, the tube made of braid is compressed and its diameter increases. If you try to pull out the object (which is in contact with the wall), the tube will stretch in length and its diameter will decrease to a level that is smaller than the initial diameter. This increases the static friction and the inserted object is fixed in the extension sleeve.

application

The extension sleeve is put over a finger or toe. If a pull is then exerted on the corresponding limb, it pulls together firmly and fixes it by enclosing it evenly and tightly as long as the pull continues.

  • In medicine, the extension sleeve is called a girl's catcher and is used in particular for the reduction of radius fractures close to the joint or for positioning for arthroscopy of the wrist.
  • In veterinary medicine, a suture technique based on the extension sleeve, the Chinese finger trap suture , is used to attach probes.
