The building at Exterstrasse 8 is a half-timbered building erected around 1720, which has been registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Detmold in the Lippe district since December 22, 1982 .
History and architecture
The building is a two-storey, gable - independent half-timbered house in the historic old town of Detmold. The exact year of construction has not yet been dated, newer sources indicate a period around 1720, but according to architectural studies it could also be a new building from 1804.
The house on the street was acquired by the Jewish community in Detmold in 1742 together with the barn behind it , which was converted into a synagogue. The Detmold Jews converted the front building in 1803/04 and used it as a school building until 1913. The cantor's apartment was also in the house . The facade was later paneled on the ground floor, and plastered on the upper floor and the gable triangle. When the facade was uncovered in 1982, a Hebrew inscription came to light in a beam above the entrance; it reads transcribed
- "Completed in the month of Siwan 5654 Detmold - Shalit"
Siwan 5654 is the ninth month of the year 5654 in the Jewish calendar , which corresponds to the year 1804 of the Christian calendar. Shalit translates as may have many good times . The inscription was renovated and re-gilded in 2007.
The building is now a residential and commercial building.
