Extreme 40 is a class of sailing catamarans developed by TornadoSport and designed by Yves Loday and first sailed in 2005.

The hulls are the eponymous 40 feet (12.19 meters) long and made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The overall width is 26 feet (7.92 m) and the displacement is approximately 1250 kg. With a mast height of 62 feet (approx. 18.9 meters), the mainsail has an area of ​​75 square meters, the jib is 25 m² and the gennaker is 78 m².

The boats of the class reach a top speed of approx. 40 knots (74 km / h) and can sail spaced sheets at 35 knots at a wind speed of 20 to 25 knots. You will thus reach 1.5 times the wind speed.

Regattas

The first races were held in the iShares Cup in 2005 . This takes place in Asia as well as in Europe.
