Fan machine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fan machine is a reciprocating piston machine , the cylinder axes of which are evenly distributed in the direction of rotation within a subsector of the full circle , that is, in the form of an open fan . The rest of the design corresponds to a radial engine , the cylinders of which, however, are arranged evenly over the entire full circle.

Small compressors with up to 5 cylinders are common, the cylinder axes of which are arranged next to one another in relation to the plane along the crankshaft axis. (In multi-cylinder star engines, they are linked via a common main connecting rod)

A special case is the V-machine with two rows of cylinders, which usually enclose an angle between 90 and 45 °, which are used as so-called V-motors in motorcycles, but also as compressors in air compressors.

We are talking about machines instead of motors, since there can be (combustion) motors , compressors , pumps and steam engines in this arrangement.
