Fæmund II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fæmund II is a cargo ship that has been converted into a passenger ship and operates on the Femund Sea in Norway during the summer months .

Historical (D / S Fæmund)

After the decision to build a road from Røros to Lake Femund in 1884 , the steam ship company Fæmund (A / S Fæmund) was founded on August 7, 1886 with the aim of regular steam ship operations on Lake Femund. For this purpose, Ørens Mekaniske Værksted, Trondheim , built a 53 ft (16.2 m) long and 12 ft (3.7 m) wide, steam-powered wooden boat called 'D / S Fæmund'. The maiden voyage took place on June 25, 1887. After that, in addition to goods and mail, it also transported wood and charcoal. However, she no longer took part in the transport of ore, slag and copper, because the huts in Femundsenden and Femundshytten that could be reached by water had already been closed decades earlier.

Procurement and construction

On August 19, 1904, an extraordinary general meeting of the operating company A / S Fæmund decided to procure a larger successor ship for D / S Fæmund. As a new ship, a steam-powered steel ship with a length of 82 ft (25 m), 17 ft (5.2 m) width and a draft of 6 ft (1.8 m) was commissioned from Ørens Mekaniske Værksted, Trondheim . This was a fully developed design that was offered by the shipyard. For use on the inland lake Femund, the ship had to be dismantled again to be taken by train from Trondheim to Røros and then transported by horse-drawn carriage to Synnervika on the Femundsee and put back together again. As the largest part, the boiler was transported as a whole.

Commissioning

With the maiden voyage of the D / S Fæmund II on June 10, 1905, the D / S Femund was decommissioned and its ship's bell was mounted on the crane mast of its successor. The Fæmund II was designed for a crew of 4 people and a maximum of 168 passengers. The number of passable passerines was based on the freight volume.

As a special feature, there was an area for cattle and vehicle transport on the main deck behind the bridge . A loading crane for general cargo including the winch required for operation can still be found in the middle of the front deck. The crane is no longer in use these days, but the mast gives the ship its characteristic silhouette.

When it was commissioned, the D / S Fæmund II was Norway's largest inland waterway vessel with no connection to the sea.

Steam engine

The D / S Fæmund II was powered by a 120 hp steam engine. Up to and including 1946, the steam engine's boiler was fired exclusively with wood, with an annual consumption of 330 favn (equivalent to about 735 m 3 of stacked wood ). By using 30 tons of coal, the amount of wood required could be almost halved in the following years (1947: 174 favn).

Conversions

In 1958 the steam engine was replaced by a 160 hp diesel engine. In 1980 the main deck was closed and converted into a saloon. As a result of this structural change, cattle and vehicle transports can no longer be carried out since then, and the Fæmund II has become an almost pure tourist ship for up to 100 passengers. After the renovation, Fæmund II was shown on the 1.50 kroner postage in 1981.

business

Since 1887 there has been regular traffic every season on the Femundsee. However, the Burvika and Femundsenden stations have not been used since the 2005 timetable, so only the central and northern part of the lake as far as Elgå are supplied. In 2018, Burvika will be served by a few courses in the main season.
