Félix Lorioux (born December 2, 1872 in Angers , † September 19, 1964 in Paris ) was a French painter and illustrator .

Life

After training as a glass painter , he studied art at the Angers Academy , later, after his military service, in Paris . The encounter with the Draeger brothers of the printing company of the same name introduced him to the world of advertising and to the Hachette publishing house. During the First World War he worked at Citroën as a technical draftsman.

Between 1919 and 1926 he illustrated Charles Perrault's fairy tales for Hachette , Molière's Imaginary Sick in 1928 . His style was felt to be too individual and Hachette separated from him in the 1930s. As a friend of Walt Disney , he was responsible for the adaptation of the Silly melodies , before separating from him in an argument. Lorioux's fantastic style compromised the stereotypical character of the Mickey figure.

From 1943 he worked for the publisher Marcus, who commissioned him to illustrate the Buffons des Enfants (1943) and later a second version of the Fables de La Fontaine (1949); Lorioux now illustrated not just a few fables, each with numerous pictures, but conversely, numerous fables, each with fewer pictures. From the La Fontaine illustrations published by Hachette in 1929, he only adopted details and put his new pictures under a completely new concept. They were now even more colorful, detailed and humorous than those of his first suite.

He also illustrated several hundred albums for children and has made a name for himself over the years for the outstanding artistic quality of his work. Lorioux is one of the few illustrators who developed an absolutely unmistakable personal style.
