Félix Pons Irazazábal

Félix Pons (born September 14, 1942 in Palma ; † July 2, 2010 ibid) was a Spanish lawyer and politician of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE).

biography

After attending school, he studied law and worked as a lawyer after being admitted . His father, as an opponent of the regime of Francisco Franco , already went into exile .

After his return, Pons joined the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) as a member in 1974, shortly before the beginning of the transition ( Transición ) .

In July 1985, Prime Minister Felipe González appointed him Minister for Territorial Administration ( Ministro de Administración Territorial ) in his cabinet. He was succeeded as minister on July 26, 1986 by Joaquín Almunia .

After the success of the PSOE in the elections to parliament ( Cortes Generales ) on June 22, 1986, in which the party got 44.1% of the vote and won 184 seats, Pons was himself elected President of the House of Representatives ( Congreso de los Diputados ) . He held this post for ten years until the PSOE was defeated in the 1996 parliamentary elections .

He then withdrew from politics and worked as a lawyer in Palma de Mallorca until his death from a pancreatic tumor . In addition, he accepted a position as professor of commercial law at the University of the Balearic Islands .

For his services he received in addition to the Grand Cross from the Order of Charles III. also the Gold Medal of the Autonomous Communities of the Balearic Islands ( Medalla de Oro de la Comunidad Autónoma de Baleares ).
