Five-spice powder

The five spice powder ( Chinese  五香粉 , Pinyin wǔxiāngfěn , English Five Spice , vietn. (Bột) Ngũ vị hương ) is an Asian spice mixture, made up of the following 5 ingredients:

  1. Real star anise
  2. Szechuan pepper ("Japanese pepper")
  3. Cinnamon cassia
  4. fennel
  5. Clove

The ingredients are ground together and used, for example, to marinate meat, poultry or fish. The star anise provides the strongest flavor in the mix. Variations can also contain other spices such as green cardamom or ginger .
