The five ridge tower

The Fünfgratturm is a defense tower in Augsburg . It was built in 1454 as part of Augsburg's eastern city fortifications around Jakobervorstadt . It has been isolated since this part of the city wall was torn down in 1867/68. It was specially built for the so-called crowd guards - patrols that ensured that the Augsburgers could sleep peacefully. The tower was renovated in 1948 and 1973/74. It is a listed building .

In Augsburg usage, the five- finger tower is also known as the five-finger tower and should not be confused with the five-finger tower in Darmstadt .

description

The four-sided tower has four small watch towers standing on cantilever consoles . Together with the tent roof of the main tower, there are five “ridges” from which the tower owes its name.

In addition to the ground floor, a barrel vault, there are three floors accessible by ladders. There is a wall fresco on the top floor . However, access was closed to the public for a long time due to ailing wooden stairs. Thanks to a donation from an Augsburg bank, the stairs and wooden floors have now been renovated. The tower is now accessible up to the first floor for events.

The donation also financed a study by a castle expert on the construction status of the tower.

Referendum

Fünfgratturm with stairs (stairs under construction)

The Fünfgratturm was the subject of a public petition at the end of 2007 / beginning of 2008 : at the instigation of the citizens' initiative Society for the Preservation of Augsburger Kulturdenkmale eV (Altaugsburg Society) , the tower is to receive an outside staircase to make it more accessible. On the other hand, the citizens' initiative against adding stairs to the five-finger tower initiated a referendum. On April 3, 2008, however, the Augsburg city council decided with a large majority that the request was inadmissible.
