The North Korean propaganda campaign "For a haircut in line with the socialist lifestyle" ( Chosŏn'gŭl : 사회 주의적 생활 양식 에 맞게 머리 단장 을 하자 ) started in 2005 with a broadcast on the state broadcaster ( Korean Central TV ). It was justified by the fact that long hair sucked nutrients out of the body and would also look neglected. A bi-weekly visit to the hairdresser was recommended. The hair of men should be at least one and a maximum of five centimeters long.

Women were allowed to wear longer hair, and there was also an exception for older men: in order to hide the onset of hair loss, those affected were allowed to grow their hair a few centimeters longer to cover the light areas. North Koreans who did not adhere to the hairstyle rules were shown on television with their names and addresses.

In 2013 , 28 official hairstyles were ordered under Kim Jong-il's son, Kim Jong-un . Pictures of these haircuts were posted at the hairdressers. Ten of the hairstyles were male and 18 female. Various media reported in spring 2014 that from now on North Korean students should wear Kim Jong Un's haircut. Women were recommended a hairstyle similar to the short haircut of Jong-uns woman, Ri Sol-ju .

The journalist Hamish Macdonald of NK News reports skepticism about the recurring reports about North Korean haircut regulations in western media. There are fashion guidelines, but they are not strictly enforced.
