The Princely House in Opole is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It is located on Oppelner Ring .

history

The Princely House is the first house on Oppelner Ring. It owes its name to the Opole dukes who resided in the Opole Piast Castle. After Duke Johann II, the Opole branch of the Silesian Piasts , went extinct in 1532, their possessions fell as settled fiefs to the Crown of Bohemia , which had been held by the Habsburgs since 1526 .

It is not known when the building was constructed. It is assumed, however, that it was built in the 15th century, when the Opole Duke Johann I had stone buildings built on the Ring.

In the great city fire in 1615, the Princely House was not spared either. After the reconstruction, the house got its present form. During the Swedish invasion in the Second Northern War in 1655, the Polish King John II Casimir fled to Silesia and stayed in the Princely House of Opole for a while. During the 17th century, the house was one of the first in the city to receive a trade license.

In 1824 the Princely House received a classicist decoration. In the same year it was opened by the pharmacist Heinrich Grabowsky, who opened the “Zum Löwen” pharmacy there. The entrance area is still decorated with a lion. The Princely House was largely spared during World War II . From 1945 it functioned as a residential and service building. Today the city music library is in the south wing and a bank on the ground floor.
