Füsun Onur (born February 12, 1938 in Kuzguncuk , Istanbul ) is a Turkish installation artist .

life and work

Füsun Onur was trained at the Üsküdar American Lisesi until 1956 and then studied until 1960 at the Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi with Ali Hadi Bara (1906–1971).

Onur used a Fulbright scholarship to stay in America in 1962 . From 1963 to 1967 she studied sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art . Back in Istanbul, Onur worked freelance in her own studio.

“The insistence on the importance of individual experience and the use of everyday materials and found objects characterize the objects and environments of Füsun Onur from the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, the artist, born in Istanbul in 1938, has consistently created the fragile, often ephemeral furniture of her private mythology. Panes of glass, woolen threads, spun tulle, wooden scaffolding, clothes, chairs, boxes and balls are the materials from which she builds her ephemeral objects and sensory spaces of brittle poetry. "

“(...) Only humans can perceive the double meaning of symbols. (...) Not using symbols causes a loss of tension in life and kills creativity. Then you are content with what can be seen in the picture or in the sculpture. This is a portrait, this is a still life, this is a landscape ... By labeling and categorizing the works, the works are placed in the list of friends. That causes a loss of meaning. Actually, the audience is there to increase the importance. Creative visitors also influence the artists. A dialogue should take place between artists and visitors. "
