FM Summerfield was an assembly plant for motor vehicles and thus part of the automotive industry in Ireland .

Company history

Frederick M. Summerfield and Richard J. Duggan founded the company on May 1, 1923. The company was based in Dublin . Francis F. Tiernay was the manager. At first they were only active as a dealership , selling vehicles from the Maxwell Motor Company and Chrysler . In 1934 the assembly of automobiles began. The parts came from Chrysler and Plymouth , at times also from DeSoto . All vehicles were marketed as Chrysler. In 1941 production was interrupted because of the Second World War.

In 1945 it continued. Chrysler models created from 1945 to 1951, Plymouth models, which now Chrysler Plymouth were called, from 1946 to 1960. In addition, for some 1,945 trucks from Fargo survived. In addition, vehicles from Renault were offered and temporarily assembled from around 1946 .

In 1954, McGee's Stores acquired the company, but kept it under the old name. Vehicle assembly ended in 1960.

The end came in 1964. McGee's (Dublin) became the successor company.

vehicles

From 1934 Plymouth assembled the PJ ( Business , Deluxe or Standard ), P2 , P4 , P6 , P8 , P10 and 12 models and Chrysler C6 , C7 , C16 , C18 and C22 . The Plymouth were given the model names Baldoyle, Leopardstown and FMS, named after Irish racetracks. One model from DeSoto was called the Curragh.

Six P14s have survived for 1945, some of which were imported as early as 1941. It wasn't until 1946 that the brand name Plymouth was used. The first model was the P15 , which, like the Chrysler C38W , was manufactured until 1948. In 1949 only the Plymouth P18 was built . In 1950 it was the Plymouth P20 and the Chrysler C48 ( Royal or Windsor ), in 1951 the Plymouth C23 and the Chrysler C51 . After two years without assembly, the Plymouth P25 / 2 was built in 1954 and the Plymouth P26 in 1955 ( Plaza , Savoy or Belvedere ). After another three years without assembly, the Plymouth M / 156 was assembled in 1959 and the Plymouth M156 in 1960 .

The assembly of Renault models is said to have taken place from around 1946 to 1957. There is an advertisement from the time, directed by McGee's, dated circa 1955. In it, the Renault 4 CV assembled and sold by Summerfield is referred to as the Renault 750. However, no approval numbers are known. From 1958 the O'Flaherty Group was responsible for assembling and selling Renault vehicles. Renault only appeared in the registration statistics from 1958.
