FORMOSAT-5 is an earth observation satellite of the Taiwanese National Space Organization of the Republic of China (NSPO) as part of the FORMOSAT program .

On August 24, 2017, at 18:51 UTC, it was brought into a near polar and sun-synchronous orbit by a Falcon-9 launcher from Vandenberg Air Force Base and is to replace FORMOSAT-2 , which was shut down in August 2016.

The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with a Remote Sensing Imager (RSI) with a 45 cm primary mirror, which delivers images with a resolution of four (four band multispectral) or two ( panchromatic ) meters and a swath width of 24 km. In addition, an Advanced Ionospheric Probe (AIP) instrument is on board, which is used to investigate the plasma (composition, density, speed and temperature of electrons and ions) in the ionosphere . The satellite has a planned lifespan of five years.
