Formosat-2 (also called ROCSAT 2 - Republic of China Satellite 2) is a Taiwanese earth observation satellite of the Taiwanese National Space Program Office (NSPO) from the FORMOSAT program .
It was primarily used for remote sensing of the earth. The images had a swath width of 24 × 24 km and a geometric resolution of 2 m (panchromatic) or 8 m (four-channel multispectral). They have been used for numerous applications such as agricultural science, landscape protection, disaster control and the like. The sensors of the camera of the Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI) equipped with a 60 cm mirror worked in the spectral range from 0.45 to 0.90 μm (panchromatic camera) or 0.45-0.52 μm (blue). 52-0.60 μm (green), 0.63-0.69 μm (red) and 0.76-0.90 μm (near infrared). In addition, the Imager of Sprites and Upper Atmospheric Lightning (ISUAL) instrument for observing lightning in the upper atmosphere (40–100 km) is on board.
The satellite was launched into sun-synchronous orbit on May 19, 2004 from Vandenberg Air Force Base with a Taurus-XL rocket. Astrium supplied the satellite bus . The planned service life was five years, but the satellite worked without problems for over 12 years. An irreparable defect occurred at the end of June 2016, so the NSPO took the satellite out of service on August 19, 2016.
The successor FORMOSAT-5 was launched on August 24, 2017.
