Free Rocket Over Ground ( FROG ) (about: Free Over-the-ground missile , with Frog and Frog means) is the Air Standardization Coordinating Committee (ASCC) of the NATO assigned name for a series of in the Soviet Union developed short-range missiles . All rockets are single-stage, unguided, spin-stabilized solid rockets .

Frog-1

The 3R2 (3Р2) missile of the 2K4 Filin tactical missile complex was designated as the Frog-1 . The missile carries a nuclear warhead with a range of 25.7 km and a CEP of 1,000 m. The system, which was produced in small numbers in 1957/58, was not used by the troops.

Frog-2

The missile 3R1 (3Р1) of the tactical missile complex 2K1 Mars was designated as Frog-2 . The missile carries a nuclear warhead with a range of 17.5 km and a hit accuracy of 770 m. The 25 launch vehicles manufactured in 1959/60 were removed from the armament of the Soviet Army by 1970 .

Frog-3

The Frog-3 is the 3R9 (3Р9) missile of the 2K6 Luna tactical missile complex . The missile carries a conventional fragmentation warhead with a range of up to 44.5 km and a hit accuracy of 1200-2000 m. The weapon system was produced in large numbers, used in the Soviet Army until 1982 and exported to numerous countries.

Frog-4

A geophysical research rocket based on the 3R9 rocket was identified as Frog-4 .

Frog-5

The Frog-5 is the 3R10 (3Р10) missile of the 2K6 Luna tactical missile complex . The missile carries a nuclear warhead with a range of 32.2 km and a hit accuracy of 1200-2000 m. The weapon system was produced in large numbers and used in the Soviet Army until 1982. The 2K6 Luna weapon systems exported to other countries can, with a few exceptions, also fire 3R10 rockets, but the nuclear warheads remained in the control of the Soviet troops. The 3R11 training rocket, which has an imitation device instead of the warhead, is outwardly similar to the 3R10 rocket.

Frog-6

A training system has been identified as Frog-6 . So far, only one photo is known of such a vehicle. However, according to Russian authors, it is the prototype of the Br-216 (Бр-226) launch pad of the 2K6 Luna tactical missile complex . The development was stopped, the device did not get into the troop service.

Frog-7

The 9M21 (9М21) and 3R11 (3Р11) missiles of the 9K52 Luna-M tactical missile complex are designated as Frog-7 . The export designation of the weapon system is R-65 (Р-65) or R-70 (Р-70).

Frog-7A refers to the 3R11 (3Р11) missile, Frog-7B the 9M21 (9М21) missile. Various conventional and nuclear warheads are available for the 9M21 missile. The weapon system was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1964 and exported to numerous countries.

Others

During the Cuban Missile Crisis , the Soviet Union stationed Luna missiles in Cuba. The US only found out about this after the end of the crisis.
