The PROTOS is a low-floor - multiple unit h for regional transport with a top speed of 160 km /. It was developed and built by FTD Fahrzeugtechnik Dessau . The electrical equipment comes from Vossloh Kiepe , Düsseldorf.
The platform allows one-part and multi-part vehicles, with each car having an independent drive module and a powered bogie as standard equipment. Thanks to this independence, wagons with different drive types and thus hybrid solutions can be implemented. Furthermore, the maximum speed and acceleration are independent of the number of cars. Multiple traction is possible. The vehicle concept allows the interior to be changed at a later date. The low-floor area comprises around 60% of the total usable area for passengers. The Protos complies with the prEN 15227 standard for collision safety.
Since September 23, 2007, the Dutch transport company Connexxion has been using five 2-part electric multiple units of the PROTOS between Ede - Wageningen and Amersfoort (NL).
