The Faïencerie Dondelinger was a family of ceramic industry in Echternach . In the tradition of many other similar ceramic manufacturers in Echternach and in the Luxembourg economic area, the company is facing centralization and market shakeout in the middle of the 19th century.

history

It was founded in 1797 by Jean-Henri Dondelinger and established in the buildings of the former imperial abbey of Echternach . The four kilns were built in the nave , a church tower served as a fireplace. In the year of death of the company founder in 1816, 100 workers were employed. His successor was his 29-year-old son Jean-Henri Dondelinger jun. His brother-in-law Jean-Gaspard Müller supported him. But it quickly became clear that both had to go their separate ways; the company was divided into two and two ovens.

Part Müller

After Müller died on April 23, 1836, Jean-François Boch bought part of the factory with the help of the Société d'Industrie luxembourgeoise in order to control the European stoneware market. He had new ovens installed, but as early as 1843 production was stopped due to unprofitability. As a result, the Société d'Industrie luxembourgeoise sold the manufacture to the Luxembourg government, who converted it into a barracks.

Part Dondelinger

Dondelinger also owned two ovens and ceased operations in 1840. From 1845 the Clausen printer and wallpaper manufacturer Jacques Lamort rented Dondelinger's part. After the death of Jean-Henri Dondelinger jun. In 1850 Jacques Lamort acquired the stoneware factory as property; His son Charles succeeded him in 1856, and a year later he founded another factory in Sierck-les-Bains in Lorraine .

On the initiative of the citizens of Echternach, after part of the choir collapsed and the rest of the church threatened to collapse into ruin, a society (Willibrordus-Bauverein) was set up to save the St. Willibrord Basilica , which collected money for the restoration . Production was outsourced to other parts of the building in the former monastery. The restored church was consecrated again in 1868. In 1862 Lamort had two new ovens built in the garden of the monastery barn in Echternach and employed 69 workers at that time. Charles Lamort left Echternach; until 1874 took over and directed Jean-Henri Dondelinger III. the factory founded by his grandfather, which expanded production with a third furnace.

Until 1885 the brothers Jean and Pierre Zens worked as ceramic painters in the workshops. They bought white stoneware from Limoges and Mettlach and decorated it artfully. After ten years they moved to Luxembourg City. This ended the production and refinement of faience at this location.
