Theodorus "Theo" Hendrikus Bot (* July 20, 1911 in Dordrecht , Province of South Holland ; † September 24, 1984 in The Hague ) was a Dutch politician of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), who was among other things State Secretary, Minister and Ambassador in Canada and in Austria was.

Life

Studies, captivity and professional career

After attending the Gemeentelijk Gymnasium in Apeldoorn in 1930, Bot began studying Indian law at the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht , which he completed in September 1936. In the meantime he also graduated from the school for reserve officers of the mounted artillery SROBA ( School voor Reserve-Officieren der Bereden-Artillerie ) in Ede and was most recently reserve lieutenant of the mounted artillery.

After completing his studies, he was a civil servant in the East Asian Service for the Dutch East Indies in Purwakarta and Sukabumi from 1936 to 1942 . For his services he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion on April 29, 1957 .

State Secretary, Minister and Ambassador

On November 23, 1959 Bot was appointed State Secretary for Affairs of Dutch New Guinea in the Ministry of the Interior ( Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken ) by Prime Minister Jan de Quay in his cabinet and held this position until July 24, 1963. Most recently, he was a representative of the Catholic Church Volkspartij (KVP) from July 2 to 24, 1963, briefly member of the Second Chamber of the States General .

De Quay's successor, Victor Marijnen , appointed Bot Minister for Education, Art and Science ( Minister van Onderwijs, Kunsten en Wetenschappen ) in his cabinet on July 24, 1963 , and held this ministerial office until April 14, 1965. He was then appointed by the new Prime Minister Jo Cals was appointed Minister without Portfolio in his cabinet on April 14, 1965 with responsibility for aid to developing countries . His son Ben Bot was also the ambassador and foreign minister of the Netherlands from 2003 to 2007 .
