The Faberpark , also called Faberwald , is a park-like forest in Nuremberg .

location

The Faberpark is located in the south-western part of Röthenbach near Schweinau , on the border with the neighboring town of Stein . It borders on Rednitzstrasse to the northwest, the Faber-Castell company premises and Castellstrasse to the west and the residential area on Eibacher Schussleitenweg to the south. The park is traversed by the Röthenbacher Landgraben and today has a size of 27.1 hectares.

history

The pencil manufacturer Lothar von Faber acquired the land in 1842 and built a villa in the neo-renaissance style. In 1852/53 a 30 hectare English landscape garden was laid out next to the villa according to plans by the landscape gardener Adolf Wagner, which included meadows and wooded areas, bridges, a 1 hectare pond and a mausoleum. In 1872 the Faberschloss was built, which, like the villa, is located in the urban area of the city of Stein.

After 1970 the Faber-Castell family tried to rededicate the park into building land, but met strong resistance from the population. The park has been under landscape protection since 1971 . In 1981, the Free State of Bavaria acquired two thirds of the site and handed it over to the City of Nuremberg on condition that the neglected park be opened and maintained. In 1982 the city council decided on a park maintenance concept and, for ecological reasons, decided against restoring the original park in favor of a natural park forest. The park has been open to the public since 1984.
