The company Mechanical Cotton Spinning and Weaving Augsburg ( SWA for short ) was founded in 1837 and was one of the oldest textile production companies in Germany. It was closed in 1989.

The establishment was initiated by the Schaezler bank with a capital of 1.2 million guilders. It thus marks the beginning of the typical Augsburg development into large companies that were financed as stock corporations by a small group of merchants and bankers. The plan came from the architect Ludwig Lendorff and the equipment of the factory from the Alsatian machine factory Andre Koechlin & Cie in Mühlhausen.

In addition to an already existing weaving mill, the Swiss architecture firm Séquin & Knobel built another weaving mill for 640 looms and a spinning mill building for over 42,000 spindles (Plant III) - a castle-like brick building with four floors (basement and three floors) on the Proviantbach in 1895/98 three corner towers are towered over. The building was given the name “ Factory Castle ” because of its appearance . In addition to the use of steam power, water power mainly provided the required energy of up to 400 kW.

Parts of the factory buildings and the former residential area ( Proviantbachquartier ), which significantly characterize the Augsburg textile district, have been preserved. The factory lock was repaired and is now used as business and sales rooms.
