The Fackelbrunnen , also called Fackelwoogbrunnen , is a fountain in the green area between Burgstrasse and Fruchthallstrasse in Kaiserslautern .

history

The fountain was created by the sculptor Friedrich Korter from Kaiserslautern and stood on the torch round from 1939 . In 1975 it was dismantled together with the roundabout due to the construction of the Karstadt underpass and moved to its current location. The name is derived from the Middle High German vark, farh = pig and refers to the pigs that were once allowed to wallow in the numerous woogen in and around Kaiserslautern.

background

In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the torchlight was located in the area west of the torch ring. The torchlight was won by damming the Ziegelbach and served as a fish pond and to water the pigs. During the 18th century it was drained and later built on. The torch ring, the torch woog street and the torch fountain refer to this earlier woog.
