FM Global is an American industrial property insurance company whose business model is based on property protection through risk analysis and risk minimization. The offer includes general and specialized risk management , materials research , materials testing and certifications , especially in the area of protection against natural disasters and fire protection. The aim of risk management is the best possible avoidance of property damage through appropriate damage prevention measures. The insurer is of the opinion that the majority of all industrial property damage is avoidable.

Business activity
FM Global deals with risks differently than other insurance companies. Based on the conviction that it is better and cheaper for companies to avoid damage than to repair it afterwards, the company offers comprehensive insurance services in addition to advice in the areas of risk management and damage prevention.
That is why over 1,800 engineers work for FM Global worldwide. They analyze and assess the customer's existing risk potential. On the basis of this analysis, it is worked out together with the customer which organizational and structural measures should be taken to reduce the risk of damage. In addition to the engineering experience and the knowledge gathered in the company for more than 175 years, the research results from the FM Global Research Campus in Rhode Island, USA, form the foundation of the risk analyzes.
FM Global operates exclusively in the industrial insurance market. Insurance for small and medium-sized companies is also offered through the subsidiary Affiliated FM . According to the company, every third Fortune 1000 company uses the services of FM Global. Through its German location in Frankfurt am Main , FM Global insures 4,900 operating locations nationwide with an insurance value of over 230 billion euros.
Research Campus
In the USA , FM Global operates its own research and test center ( Research Campus ) on an area of 648 hectares in West Glocester, Rhode Island . According to the company, the world's largest and most modern research and test center of this type is carried out in the fields of fire protection technology, elementary hazards, electrical hazards and hydraulics. Among other things, the fire behavior of various materials, the behavior of certain materials under storm conditions, the explosion behavior of dusty materials and the effectiveness of certain fire protection devices and technologies such as sprinkler systems are examined. In addition to basic research, specific questions from customers are also the subject of investigations and material tests. The results are incorporated into concepts and techniques for active loss prevention.
Center for Property Risk Solutions
In 2011, FM Global also opened a Center for Property Risk Solutions in Norwood , Massachusetts . The so-called SimZone is at the center of the system. In this area, realistic simulations of everyday environmental and hazard scenarios such as fire, the release of flammable liquids, building risks, system defects and electrical hazards are simulated and examined on around 1,100 m². The center for loss prevention also includes the company's research departments, departments for testing and certification of products, the development department for technical property protection guidelines, as well as training rooms for the Enterprise Learning department.

Today's insurance company FM Global was founded in 1835 by the textile mill owner Zachariah Allen in Rhode Island , USA as Manufacturers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company . Over the years, the group Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies ( Factory Mutual for short ) was created through the merger with other insurance companies . From this short form of the name comes the acronym FM in today's name FM Global . In its current form, FM Global was created through the merger of sister companies Allendale Mutual Insurance Company , Arkwright Mutual Insurance Company and Protection Mutual Insurance Company in 1999.

Today, FM Global is an industrial property insurer with international operations in over 100 countries, which also offers engineering advice in the field of loss prevention and risk management. In fiscal 2013, the company had gross written premiums of $ 5.6 billion worldwide and reserves of $ 9.7 billion. Net income was US $ 1.02 billion.
