The Fagridalur is a high valley and at the same time the name of a pass road in Iceland . It lies in the east of the country between the towns of Egilsstaðir and Reyðarfjörður .

Characteristics

The ring road leads southeast of Egilsstaðir up to a pass up to 350 m and then steeply down into the valley of the Reyðarfjörður fjord. Until November 2017 this route was still part of the Norðfjarðarvegur S92 .

It is an important transport link on which all places in the area such as Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður as well as Reyðarfjörður with the aluminum plant depend. In winter or after heavy rainfall, however, the road may be closed due to heavy snowfall, avalanches or landslides. There is an emergency hut around the top of the pass.

The road meanders between mountains over 1,100 m high. These are ancient volcanoes that were active around 10 million years ago.

geology

If you approach Reyðarfjörður, you can also clearly see how the rock layers are sloping here. They are tipping towards a central volcano that has been extinct for around 12 million years.
