As bike gate , a case of illegal resale is referred bicycles at the Leipzig police. In 2019, around 1,700 bicycles per 100,000 inhabitants were stolen in Leipzig . This put Leipzig at the top of the 25 largest cities in Germany in terms of thefts per inhabitant. The Saxony Police founded an investigation unit back in 2012. It was one of their tasks to store seized bicycles until they were scrapped or otherwise recycled. Irregularities were found in 2019. Bicycles were handed over to a private association and through this the bikes are said to have been resold. The Integrated Investigation Unit Saxony (INES) in the State Criminal Police Office Saxony is responsible for investigations in the area of ​​corruption and carried out a house search in July 2019. There the investigators secured numerous documents. In the same year, the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior was informed of the corruption scandal. The Saxon Interior Minister Roland Wöller ordered an investigation into the incidents in June 2020. These are to be headed by Klaus Fleischmann , former Saxon attorney general.
