Bicycle rental system in Beijing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beijing has had a bike rental system since 2005 . In August 2007 there were 5,000 bikes at 31 stations in key places; they are operated by the private company "Beijing Bicycle Rental Services". No further technical details are known. Since franchising is also to be offered, it is assumed that these are staffed stations, similar to the containers that exist in Swiss cities . The franchisees are to receive 1 yuan per bike per day and a share in the profits. The bikes can be returned at any station.

At the end of August 2007, plans were published to expand this network to 50,000 bicycles at 200 to 230 stations before the start of the Olympic Games in 2008. The annual subscription costs around ten euros (100 yuan) or one euro per day, and a security deposit of 40 euros (400 yuan) must be paid, which will be refunded when the bike is returned. In 2003, Beijing had nine to ten million registered private bicycles, for prices starting at 200 yuan. In the area of the spokes, the wheels carry the company's own advertising: “For Beijing's blue sky”.

During the 2008 Olympic Games, around 63 bike rental stations were in operation. In Beijing, the expansion of this bike sharing has been financially supported since 2007 by the department against bicycle theft of the city's public security office in cooperation with the Beijing environmental administration. A local police spokesman told China Daily newspaper that the central management of bicycles by means of bike sharing was the most effective way of relieving citizens of the fear of bicycle theft. This has the same priority as reducing traffic congestion, air pollution and noise.

Thanks to the emergence of a number of dockless, app-based bike rental systems such as Mobike, Bluegogo and Ofo , cycling has grown in popularity again.
