Fairview Cemetery is a Canadian cemetery in Halifax , Nova Scotia .

In addition to many personalities from the city of Halifax, 121 victims of the Titanic disaster are buried in Fairview Cemetery , some of whom have never been identified. Another 29 victims lie in Mount Olivet Cemetery and Baron de Hirsch Cemetery in Halifax.

One of the most famous personalities who found their resting place in Fairview Cemetery is John Law Hume , known as "Jock", who was a violinist in the ship's orchestra. Hume's grave, like most of the graves of the Titanic victims, bears only the inscription next to the name: Died April 15, 1912. 193 . The 193 was the number of Hume's body given on the rescue ship that found him.

Joseph Dawson's gravestone

Another well-known headstone in Fairview Cemetery is that of an unidentified child who was found at the scene of the accident. It bears the inscription: Erected to the memory of an unknown child whose remains were recovered after the disaster to the "Titanic" April 15th 1912 . In November 2002, after a DNA analysis, it was announced that the thirteen-month-old Eino Viljami Panula from Finland was lying in the grave, but this turned out to be wrong. The child's real identity was clarified in August 2007 by another DNA analysis. It was the nineteen-month-old Sidney Leslie Goodwin from Great Britain , who had died in the accident along with his parents and siblings.

The tombstone with the number 227 bears the name " J. Dawson " next to the date of death . Since the 1997 film Titanic was released, this tomb has been mistaken for that of Jack Dawson , the fictional character played by Leonardo DiCaprio but who never existed. In fact, the "J." stands for "Joseph". Joseph Dawson was a coal trimmer on the Titanic. Nevertheless, many fans have made pilgrimages to this grave since then, leaving flowers and candles.
