Omar Raddad case

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Omar Raddad case began with the murder of Ghislaine Marchal in 1991 in her villa “La Chamade” in Mougins ( Alpes-Maritimes ). The grammatically incorrect sentence "OMAR M'A TUER" (for example: "Omar killed me"), which was written on the wall at the scene of the crime with Marchal's blood, prompted the judiciary to dismiss the Moroccan Omar Raddad, the victim's gardener, despite him To accuse pledges of innocence. The defendant was defended by the lawyer Jacques Vergès and sentenced on February 2, 1994 to 18 years in prison. He was released on September 4, 1998, after seven years in prison after the then French President Jacques Chirac pardoned him on May 10, 1996 . However, Raddad is still fighting for confirmation of his innocence to this day.

background

This case became known because of the ambiguity surrounding the murder scenario. Ghislaine Marchal's body was found in the basement, the door of which was locked from the inside. Open questions were, for example, whether Marchal really had the time and strength to lock himself in and write the words on the wall, despite the terrible injuries that could be seen on her body, or whether they were written by the murderer.

The gardener's conviction caused great controversy in France as well as in Morocco, his homeland. The defense criticized the manner in which the investigation was carried out and disagreed, among other things, with the results of the autopsy and graphological analyzes. After the conviction, Vergès announced that the defendant's North African origin played a role in the trial, especially after it was discovered that the investigators did not tell the judge the presence of a third DNA trace at the time and presented Omar Raddad as the sole suspect at the time .

The sentence in blood "OMAR M'A TUER" remains symbolic and also questionable to this day because it was misspelled. The correct spelling would be “Omar m'a tuée”. Such a conjugation error is very unlikely for an aristocratic well-educated woman like Ghislaine Marchal.

reception

The 2011 French drama Omar - A Justice Scandal by Roshdy Zem deals with the case.
