Fallen is a funeral doom band founded in 1996 .

history

The drummer and songwriter for the band Funeral Anders Eek began writing music for another project under the name Fallen in 1996. However, there were no publications for a long time. After the suicide of the funeral singer Einar Fredriksen, further work on the main project Funeral halted and Eek intensified efforts to activate the side project Fallen. He invited the funeral musicians Christian Loos and Kjetil Ottersen to the project. Together the project recorded a demo tape in 2004 and released the debut album A Tragedy's Bitter End in the same year . Both publications made extensive use of previously unpublished poems by Fredriksen. The album, released via Aftermath Music , was dedicated to the memory of Fredriksen. The album was mostly positively received by critics.

After the album was released, there were no further publications for a long time. The band aimed to record and release a second album. After Loos committed suicide in 2005, there were no further activities and the recordings so far remained unfinished. It was not until 2015 that a compilation was released with Fallen, which, in addition to the pieces from the album, contained two other recordings originally planned for the second studio album. Both the compilation and the album received positive reviews.

style

The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music played by Fallen as "ultra slow and extreme Doom , with a slight Gothic touch." The musical basis would be Funeral Doom, but it is combined with "rich orchestral arrangements and deep baritone singing ". Local comparisons are made with My Dying Bride , Shape of Despair , Murkrat and Pantheist . According to a review written for the webzine Vampster , the music is “characterized by symphonic keyboards and gentle, melancholy piano sounds.” The guitar playing is produced extensively, has a “warm sound” and is somewhat reminiscent of Solstice . The basic tempo is slow but not in the "slow-motion tempo as you know it from some other funeral bands".
