It was released in June 1980 in the United States, where the song peaked at number 3. In the UK and beyond, the song was first released in May 1982 when the TV series of the same name first aired. The disco pop song became a number one hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand.
In 1981 the song won an Oscar for Best Song and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Movie Song . The song was also awarded a gold record in the United States and the United Kingdom.
