Fanfare is a bimonthly US music magazine that publishes reviews of new CDs . The emphasis is on classical music, but since its inception, every issue has also included a jazz column. The magazine describes itself as "the magazine for serious record collectors".

History and profile

Fanfare was founded on September 1st, 1977 by the elementary school teacher Joel Bruce Flegler (born 1941) in Tenafly - initially out of a "hobby". Currently (2018) he is still the editor-in-chief and publisher of the journal.

The magazine currently has over 600 pages, of which around 80% are devoted to reviews of new publications. The rest are a considerable number of interviews , reports and book reviews. Reports on audio equipment and pop music are not included . Far more CDs are presented in the magazine than in other comparable music magazines. Subscribers get online access to current and previous articles.

Fanfare's editors have a wide range of expertise from medieval to contemporary music . Currently, over 300 music journalists for Fanfare operates, including the composer Kyle Gann and the musicologist and pianist Susan Kagan , one of the founding members of the American Beethoven Society, which is owned by the beginning of the team of the magazine. Previous staff included the well-known New York music critic and book author Alex Ross and the German musicologist and discologist Martin Elste .
