biography

Thomas was born in Illinois in 1867 as one of four children. She worked in a stationery store in her thirties, later selling hats, doing real estate business and running a fruit farm in Idaho . From 1920 to 1927 she lived with her sister Marietta in Los Angeles, where she lived until her death.

Since the death of the Frenchwoman Marie-Virginie Duhem on April 25, 1978, Fannie Thomas has been the oldest (verified) living person in the world. On November 15, 1980, she surpassed 113 years and 214 days of the oldest fully verified person of all time, Delina Filkins , from 1928 , making her the oldest person to ever live. She died 68 days later and 82 days before her 114th birthday, at the age of 113 years and 283 days at a pneumonia . Thomas said the secret to their longevity was to eat applesauce three times a day and not get married. On her 113th birthday, she said she didn't get all the fuss about being the oldest living person in the world.

Thomas' siblings also lived exceptionally long. Her oldest sister Marietta was 101 and her other older sister Lucy was 102 years old. Her only brother William died at the age of 91.

Her age record and the 114 year mark were exceeded on May 14, 1985 and August 3, 1985 by the German-American Augusta Holtz . Thomas' birthday was finally verified as April 14, 1867 by the Gerontology Research Group in 2002 . Thomas himself had always given it as April 24, 1867, ten days later. Although she was still number 1 in 1985, she dropped out of the list of the 100 oldest people in 2012 .
