Fantasy (soul band)
Fantasy was an American disco and soul band that had some hits on the Billboard R&B and dance charts in the 1980s . The quartet had their greatest success in 1980 with the single You're Too Late .
Band history
The band was put together and produced by Tony Valor in 1980. It originally consisted of two women and two men, singers Carolyn Edwards and Tamm E. Hunt and singers Ken Roberson and Rufus Jackson. Fantasy already had its biggest hit with the debut single You're Too Late , which entered the Billboard Dance Charts in December 1980 and climbed to the top. On the Billboard R&B charts, the song reached number 28 in February 1981 (Hey Who's Gotta) Funky Song , the second release from the debut album named after the band , reached number 51 on the R&B charts in June of that year.
The album Sex and Material Possessions followed in 1982. The included song Hold on Tight placed in the dance charts in March and came to number 35. Critics described Fantasys music as "vocally weak" and "more pop than soul". Other dance hits include Live the Life I Love from 1983 and He's Number One from the 1985 album of the same name, which was not released until 1994. In June 1990 the album The Best of Fantasy: You're Too Late was released with the hits released by Pavillion .
In the early 2000s, Valor reinvigorated Fantasy. In 2002 a second album named after the band was created, which was released in 2003 on his label TVI Records. However, the new formation had little in common with the original band, as it consisted of several young women: Dee, Janette, Mia and Misty. Musically, the new edition, which was again produced by Valor, offered Eurodance or Eurodance. The single Again was released in 2003, followed by Hot Shot a year later .
