Farancia erytrogramma seminola is an extinct subspecies of the rainbow mud snake ( Farancia erytrogramma ). It was endemic to southern Florida.

features

Farancia erytrogramma seminola reached a length of 130.8 cm. The adult animals had long, stocky bodies. The back was an iridescent blue and black with a red stripe or line of spots in the middle and a reddish pink stripe on each flank. The ventral scales and the two rear scales on the flanks were marked by black spots and speckles. The black markings intersected and interrupted the red and yellow areas on the stomach, throat and chin. The chin was yellow. The scales were mostly smooth on the surface, except on the back and sides where they were weakly keeled. There were 19 dorsal rows of scales in the middle of the body. The pupil was round. The young animals probably looked similar to the adults.

Occurrence

Farancia erytrogramma seminola occurred in Fisheating Creek , Glades County , which flows into the western side of Lake Okeechobe .

status

Farancia erytrogramma seminola is only known from three specimens caught between 1949 and 1952. Search efforts to rediscover this snake failed, so in 2011 it was officially declared extinct by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service .
