Splinter protection shelter in Sderot

Color red ( Hebrew צבע אדום Tzeva Adom ) is a radar warning system installed by the Israel Defense Forces in several cities near the Gaza Strip . The system's job is to warn the population of imminent rocket attacks (usually Qassam rockets ).

The system is currently installed in several southern Israeli cities that are within range of rockets launched from the Gaza Strip, including Sderot and Ashkelon . When the radar signature of a launched missile is detected by the radar, the system automatically triggers the public warning system of the nearby cities and military bases. A two-tone electronic alarm is sent out twice, followed by a recorded female voice saying the Hebrew phrase “ Tzeva Adom ” (Hebrew for “color red”) several times. This process is repeated until all missiles have hit and no further launches are detected. In Sderot, after the warning signal, the population has about 15 seconds to seek protection from the approaching projectiles. The system was set up in Ashkelon between July 2005 and April 2006.

Until 2007 the Hebrew expression " Shachar Adom " ("Red Dawn") was used. However, this was changed accordingly after a seven-year-old girl named " Shachar " (Hebrew for "twilight") complained about it.
