The Farman F.40 was a French military aircraft .
development
The Farman F.40, also known as Horace-Farman, appeared at the end of 1915 and was launched in large series. The type was a biplane with unequal wingspan and pusher propellers. The design was a mixture of earlier typical design features by Henri Farman (HF.22) and Maurice Farman ( MF.11 ). The crew nacelle , located in the middle between the upper and lower wings, was more streamlined than in earlier designs. The upper pair of beams on the tail boom took on an angular tailplane and the single fin, rounded at the front, was reminiscent of the Henry Farman series.
The pattern was widely used in the reconnaissance squadrons and also served as a starting pattern for similar types such as the F.41 , F.56 , F.60 and F.61 . A variant armed with rocket projectiles was called the F.40P.
The British Royal Navy Air Service (RNAS) also acquired 50 aircraft, the Belgian and Russian aviation forces also procured the model, and Savoia built the F.40 under license for the Italian Air Force.
At the beginning of 1917, the F.40 began to be gradually separated from the front line units, although it remained in service for a little longer on secondary war theaters. The Italian machines were used in colonial service until the 1920s.
