Lieuwe Steiger (born April 15, 1924 in Haarlem , † October 17, 2006 in Eindhoven ) was a Dutch football player . The goalkeeper was in the squad of the Dutch honorary division PSV Eindhoven for 16 years , with whom he won the KNVB-Beker in 1950 and the Dutch championship the following year . Between 1953 and 1954 he played seven international matches wearing the shirt of the Dutch national football team .

Career

At the age of five, Steiger came to Eindhoven, where his father had found a job with the light bulb manufacturer Philips . At the age of twelve he joined the youth team of PSV Eindhoven. Even then he was in goal and developed his above-average talent there. As a 18-year-old, he made the leap to the first team in 1942 and succeeded goalkeeper Leo Boumans . Those in charge of the Dutch football association KNVB became aware of Steiger's achievements and appointed him to the regional selection of the southern Netherlands.

At his club PSV, Steiger was one of the main pillars of the team. In 16 years he played 383 games for the club, which puts him in 5th place in the all-time ranking of all the club's players. In 1950 he and his team won the KNVB cup for the first time in the club's history and the following year celebrated the greatest success of his career by winning the Dutch championship. He was in the first Dutch team to take part in the 1955 European Cup.

It was only very late, after eleven years in the PSV goal, that Steiger was appointed to the Dutch national football team. His first international match was against Norway on September 27, 1953 . However, his time in the Orange jersey was frustrating. In seven missions he conceded 21 goals and was finally replaced by Frans de Munck in late 1954 .

In 1957, Steiger ended his active career at the age of 33 to devote himself to his professional career. After two years without practice, he returned to PSV's goal as a substitute for the injured Pim Bekkering , but injured himself after four missions. He then played no more games.
