The Farman F.402 was a French transport aircraft from 1933.
Mission history
The Farman F.402 was developed as a version of the F.400 with a radial engine and was used both civilly and militarily. The best known use is in the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. The aircraft was used as a transport, ambulance and liaison aircraft. It was used by both the Republicans (photo) and the nationalists. With the Republicans it was stationed in Grupo 14 de Caza in northern Spain on the Lamiaco base .
On February 15, 1939, the French pilot Paul Grieu fatally crashed while transferring a civilian Farman F.402 (F-AMTL) to Le Bourget near the village of Sanvic.
construction
The aircraft was a high- wing aircraft with thin and rounded wings that were removable. The fuselage and the wings were made of wood, which was covered with veneer. Around 200 liters of fuel could be carried in the wings. The rigid undercarriage was reinforced with massive steel girders so that it could land and take off even on rough terrain. The aircraft only needed short runways. The arrangement of the control stick on the ceiling of the cockpit, as well as a vertical steering wheel for the rudder, was unusual.
The aircraft used a 9 cylinder 110 hp Lorraine 5 Pb or 120 hp Salmson engine.
Museum plane
The “Museo del Aire” in Madrid exhibits the only Farman F.402 still in existence today. A total of 68 copies were built.
