The game Farmerama is a browser game from Bigpoint . With farm simulation, the point of the game is to keep expanding your virtual farm. After the game was released in mid-November 2009, it had 13 million players in early October 2010. Since the end of October 2010, Farmerama has been integrated into MeinVZ , StudiVZ and SchülerVZ as a so-called app . A CD is available in stores as a so-called Extended Edition, which offers additional features for the game. Farmerama has also been available as a board game since May 2012 (published by Ravensburger).

Gameplay

introduction

After the successful registration the player gets access to his virtual farm. Through experience points that can be gained through harvesting and other game actions , you can reach higher game levels . At the beginning, the player can build more types of buildings and plant new crops with each level up. In addition to the field, stables, buildings for the further processing of goods and decorations that are not relevant to the game are available to the player.

Moospenny and tulip florins

There are two game currencies in this game: Moospenny is the main form of payment. The Moospenny is used to pay for seeds , stables, decorations and trees. They are also the currency for the market. Tulip guilders are a means of payment that can be purchased with real money. With these tulip guilders you can purchase special items or unlock game features. There is also a premium offer through which the player can obtain certain advantages. A premium account can only be obtained by spending real money.

Build and harvest

The built stable produces animals within a certain period of time, which in turn are sold on the market or required for customer orders, quests and the processing building. The stable needs animal feed for production, which can be produced in a mill. The further processing buildings are built in the workshop with the help of tools and can then be placed on the respective stables. There products are made that need animals and their feed to make them. Decorative items can be purchased from the farm outfitter in town, earned at various events or given as a gift from neighbors.

Trade and seeds

At the beginning there are a few seeds ready for each player for the first planting. If more seeds are needed, they can easily be bought in the seed drill in town. From level 3 there is also free access to the market. Plants, tree fruits, animals, animal feed and products are traded here. You can both buy and sell.

Farm expansions

Wild meadow

In addition to the main field, there is the possibility of expanding your farm. From level 17 the "Wild Meadow" is available to the player. In order to be able to use the wild meadow completely, the player needs 12 neighbors. On the wild meadow is the same place as on the main field.

Ornamental garden

Furthermore, the player from level 25 has access to the ornamental garden. The first part of the ornamental garden is free, every further part is bought with moss pennies. The ornamental garden can only be used as a space for all decorations and gifts.

Forest clearing

From level 14 it is possible to get to the forest clearing. In this forest clearing you can also create fields, set up trees or stables. There is also the tree of wisdom. You can redeem collected stars on him. B. to come to the island of Bahamarama or to get a peach tree.

Bahamarama

At the tree of wisdom you can unlock Bahamarama for 50 stars. There you can plant exotic fruits and vegetables and animals such as B. breed anacondas or elephants. It is also possible to breed these animals. The island is completely independent of the main farm. The main currencies are retained, but there is a new currency, "golden bananas". You get 5 golden bananas per level up. The experience also remains independent, so new experience points must be earned. The golden bananas are required to unlock new plants, trees, animal stalls, new areas and more acreage in the monkey temple. In the case of plants and the like. However, they still have to be bought again in the seed drill.

Rainforest

The rainforest is an additional cultivation area exclusively for Bahamarama, which you can unlock for 250 stars on the tree of wisdom since the end of 2015. The rainforest works just like the main Bahamarama plantation. You can plant trees there, set stalls, sow fields and place giver items. Like Bahamarama itself, the rainforest is already available to the player when the forest clearing is activated, i.e. from level 14.

Miracle tendrils

From level 30 you have the opportunity to do a quest in the farm hall (miracle bean) and thus unlock the miracle tendril. Giver items can be set up on the wonder tendril to get a bonus for a certain time.

feature

Breeding animals

From level 21 you can breed a special animal with 4 normal animals and 2 superfoods. It can reach higher and higher levels by further breeding. You can sell the breeding animals on the market, deposit them in Quest and get experience points or display them in stables. You also need these breeding animals to be able to build upgrades for stables and workshops.

Craft district

From level 40 you can learn a craft and produce food. These can be eaten and given a bonus, or they can be sold in the market for Moospenny. From level 40 you can become a baker, jam maker or florist for free. In order to unlock the second craft, you have to buy it with tulip guilders or earn it at the "Renzos Fun Fair" event. The third craft is then automatically unlocked in the other two crafts when the third level is reached. Alchemist and spa manager can be learned from level 70 by unlocking them at the tree of wisdom.

neighbours

Neighbors are an important part of the game. The player can have 17 neighbors (as a premium player six additional neighbors and / or six additional neighbors after activating a rune on the tree of wisdom). The neighbors not only make the wild meadow permanently usable, but also bring the player more experience points as soon as they move up a level. You can exchange gifts and letters with neighbors.

communication

At Farmerama, communication between the players takes place via the in-game message system and primarily via the forum . Questions about the game are answered in the forum. Finding neighbors, exchanging experiences, introducing the players and other topics are discussed here. In the game itself there is a messaging system that players can write to and the neighborhoods. For some time now there has also been a chat where players help players.

Events

Events

There is an event in the game for special occasions. At these events you can complete new quests and grow other plants and acquire special decorative items or useful items. As a rule, 2–4 events per month take place in Farmerama (mini events such as Baby Boom & Co. excluded)!

Mini events

Mini-events are events where you can e.g. B. is offered discounts or can buy them with tulips.

Baby boom

On the "day of fertile breeding animals" one can breed breeding animals. There is a chance to have twins (do not have to be identical) and sometimes you get a breeding animal of higher levels. These are distributed randomly.

Renzo's fair

At the Renzos fair you can earn chips and exchange the chips for bonuses. These are another craft - depending on the first one unlocked - as the main prize, other prizes are different pets (which give different bonuses), giver items or experience points.

reception

Nominations and Awards

Farmerama won several prizes in 2010, including the Lara Award , the European Games Award for the best European browser game and the German Developer Award in the category of best browser game. Farmerama was also nominated for the GameStar Award in the Best Browser Game category.

Criticism of the game

Playing new game features requires large amounts of experience points and thus a high expenditure of time. The use of certain game features makes it possible to shorten waiting times considerably, but these game features have to be paid for with tulip guilders, which can be purchased with real money. Thus, players who do not want to invest any money in the additional game currency Tulpgulden have to accept a significantly higher expenditure of time than players who are willing to pay for these game features.

Criticism of the game principle

The browser game Farmerama is one of the social games . Based on the idea of a business simulation, the aim of participation is to keep the game - the farm - going. On the one hand, this game principle makes additional game features that have to be paid for with real money (e.g. harvest workers) attractive. A large proportion of the players take advantage of these offers and thus settle virtual goods with real money. On the other hand, this principle strengthens the importance of the “community”, which enables expansion of the playing area (“neighborhoods” for the “wild meadow”). These relationships must be kept alive with active participation in the game. These two aspects - purchasable features and the community - are seen as the basis for economic success. These success factors lead to the argument that such browser games are "unsocial games" that are based on "addiction" and "self-exploitation". Scientists justify the success of such games with "escape from reality", the "feeling of connectedness" and quick satisfaction through a sophisticated reward system.
