Barrel wine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barrel wine is the name for wine that is marketed without being bottled .

Bulk wine ( Swiss Standard German also open wine) serves as a base wine for the sparkling wine in sparkling wine and a wine fortified for the distillation of brandy but also for the supply of large wineries . The marketing of barrel wine saves the winemaker as producer the costs of bottling, but the proceeds depend on the respective market price. The sale of barrel wine in vintages with a large harvest is necessary when the barrel space in your own cellar is no longer sufficient.

Until the introduction of bottling with corks as a leak-proof and aroma-proof closure in the 17th century, there was no alternative to storing and transporting wine in barrels. For the transport of wine barrels there was the profession of wine shredder . The manufacture of the wooden barrels was in the hands of coopers .

Wine barrels in the Rheingau usually had the following standard sizes : single barrels (1200 liters) half barrels (600 liters) and double barrels (2400 liters).

Leaving barrel wine in the cellar as a long-term storage method is unusual today. Exceptions are the so-called rose wine in the Bremen Ratskeller , a Rüdesheimer from the 1653 vintage, which is supposed to be still drinkable and was offered to the British Queen Elisabeth II for tasting in 1978 .
