Fasting the Firstborn
The fasting of the firstborn ( Hebrew Ta'anit Bechorot ) is the obligation of every Jewish firstborn ( Hebrew bechor ) to fast on the day before Passover , the feast of the Exodus from Egypt .
The reason is the gratitude that the Israelite firstborns were spared the tenth plague when the firstborn of the Egyptians died.
