The British rock group Fat Mattress was founded by Noel Redding in 1968 and existed until the early 1970s.

history

Redding, the bass guitarist in the group Jimi Hendrix Experience , started Fat Mattress shortly before the end of this group to work as a guitarist there. He hired Jim Leverton , Neil Landon and Pete Kircher . (Kircher was later replaced by drummer Eric Dillon.)

The three musicians were already known in the rock scene, Leverton played bass with the Walker Brothers and in their hit "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", Neil Landon was singer with the Flowerpot Men and sang their hit "Let's Go To San Francisco ". Landon, Leverton and Redding had been friends since 1962. Together they toured with their group "Neil Landon And The Burnettes" through German clubs until 1965, then they broke up. In 1968 they got back together with Fat Mattress . They got a contract with Polydor and released their first LP Fat Mattress in the fall of 1969 . They sold half a million of them in the US alone.

After always playing as support act, they now toured the USA themselves. Redding and Leverton dropped out and were replaced by Mick Weaver and Steve Hammond. When they returned to the UK, they recorded their second album, Fat Mattress II , but then broke up.

Redding then recorded more records in Ireland. In the 1990s he toured with the Swiss band More Experience , who play Hendrix songs. Jim Leverton played bass for Steve Marriott , Eric Dillon changed industries and became a pilot, Neil Landon moved to Hamburg and works there as a singer to this day. Pete Kircher went to Status Quo .
