Noel Redding (born December 25, 1945 in Folkestone , † May 11, 2003 in Clonakilty , Ireland ) was a British guitarist and bassist.

career

Redding was the guitarist for the British band Neil Landon and the Burnettes in the early 1960s . However, he became famous mainly as the bassist in the group The Jimi Hendrix Experience , which Jimi Hendrix founded in 1966 together with him and drummer Mitch Mitchell . Noel answered an ad in Melody Maker that Eric Burdon was looking for new guitarists for his new band The Animals . Chas Chandler asked him during that session if he could play bass "with that guy there" - Hendrix. Noel had never played bass before, but Jimi Hendrix liked his woolly hair, which reminded him of Dylan, and Redding was hired. The entire band was put together by Chas Chandler. In 1969 the experience dissolved again.

Redding then founded the band Fat Mattress with Neil Landon and others , in which he played guitar again. In the 70s he founded the Noel Redding Band . Economically, he was not doing particularly well during this time. Therefore, in 1974 he was compelled to sell his rights to the recordings of the Jimi Hendrix Experience for $ 100,000. In the numerous re-publications of the material, it was therefore later empty.

In 1996 he published his autobiography Are you Experienced? , in which he reflected on the time with the experience and in particular explained how the members of the band, who were completely inexperienced in financial and legal matters, were "ripped off" by management and lawyers.

Noel Redding died on May 11, 2003 at the age of 57. He was found at his home in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland. The cause of death was a rupture of the abdominal aorta caused by an aneurysm .

Equipment

Noel Redding initially played a Gibson EB-2, which the manager of the Experience, Chas Chandler (formerly bassist with Animals ), had lent him, as well as a six-string Fender VI , which was supposed to make it easier for him as a real guitarist to switch to bass. In February 1967, on the advice of John Entwistle , he bought a sunburst-colored Fender Jazz Bass that would become his main instrument during his time with the Experience, and which he sold to a collector for $ 10,000 in the early 1980s. In 1997 Fender released a signature model called the "Noel Redding Jazz Bass". Redding also used an 8-string Hagström on Hendrix's Axis: Bold As Love album .

Redding was a plectrum player, which was also due to his background as a guitarist. In the early days, Redding mainly played Burns amps. Marshall amps were of course a must on every stage. The then contemporary Plexis were suitable for both guitar and bass. He also shared his amplifiers with Jimi Hendrix. From 1968, Redding also used Sunn amplifiers very often .
