The Fateh Sagar Lake ( Hindi फ़तेह सागर झील Fateh Sāgar Jhīl ) is a man-made body of water near the city of Udaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan .
location
The Fateh Sagar Lake is located on the western edge of the city of Udaipur at an altitude of approx. 590 m above sea level. d. M .; to the south it is about the Swaroop Sagar with the Pichhola Lake connected.
history
The lake was created in 1687 by order of Maharana Jai Singh. The dam wall, consisting of stones and tamped earth, had to be permanently repaired and was renewed and increased at the end of the 19th century under Maharana Fateh Singh by an approx. 800 m long dam wall located on the city side, whereby the surface and thus the capacity of the lake overall was enlarged; a few years later the lake was given its current name.
Islands
There are several small islands in the lake - the largest of which is the rectangular Nehru Park , a place for excursions with a restaurant and a small zoo; The tiny island with the Udaipur Solar Observatory is also of importance . An illuminated 20 m high water fountain rises from another island - usually in the evening hours.
Water quality
Since the lake is only fed by rainwater and small streams during the monsoon season (July to September), its water level is subject to climatic fluctuations. In the years 1998 to 2005 it dried up almost completely repeatedly. In addition, untreated sewage is still discharged into the lake, which means that the concentration of pollutants is relatively high and can only be coped with by water hyacinths , which are fought every year. Fish and water birds hardly live here anymore.
