Lake Pichhola ( Hindi पिछोला झील Picholā jhīl ) is a man-made body of water near the city of Udaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan .
location
Lake Pichhola is located on the western edge of the city of Udaipur at the foot of the City Palace of the Maharanas of Udaipur at an altitude of approx. 590 m above sea level. d. To the north it is connected to Lake Fateh Sagar via the Swaroop Sagar .
history
The lake was created in 1362 when a dam was built from rammed earth. Possibly in the years 1568/9 the Maharana Udai Singh II, who fled from Chittorgarh from the troops of the Great Mogul Akbar I , founded the city named after him, Udaipur. He is also said to have been responsible for the stone renovation and elevation of the dam, which, however, had to be repaired again and again in the following centuries.
Islands
There are four small islands in the lake: Jag Niwas with the Lake Palace (now a hotel), Jag Mandir with another summer palace, Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas .
Water quality
Since the lake is only fed by rainwater and small streams during the monsoon season (July to September), its water level is subject to climatic fluctuations. In the years 1998 to 2005 it dried up almost completely repeatedly. In addition, untreated sewage is still discharged into the lake, which means that the concentration of pollutants is relatively high and could only be coped with by water hyacinths , which are fought every year. Fish and water birds hardly live here anymore.
