Fatih Mehmed Mosque
The Fatih Mehmed Mosque ( Bulgarian Фатих Мехмед джамия / Fatih Mehmed dschamija, Turkish Fatih Mehmed Camii ), also known as Schaldarwanska Mosque (bulg. Шалдърванска джамия), is a former mosque in Kyustendil in southwestern Bulgaria . The mosque bears the name of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II.
location
The mosque is located at the intersection of Tsar Oswoboditel Street and Pautalia Street, near the ancient Roman baths in the center of Kyustendil town.
history
The Fatih Mehmed Mosque was built by the Ottoman architect Haradschi Kara Mehmed bin Ali in the mid-15th century . An inscription in the dome indicates the year 1531/32. However, it is believed that this date represents a later remodeling.
In 1968 the Fatih Mehmed and Ahmed Bey Mosques were declared national monuments of historical value. Yet today it is unused and in danger of collapsing.
description
The mosque is a cubic central building with a rather flat roof dome . The walls of the mosque were built from small blocks with mortar and covered with bricks.
