Fatmagül'ün Sucu Ne? ( German  What is Fatmagül's fault?, analogously: What can Fatmagül do for it? ) is a successful Turkish television series that was broadcast on the Turkish private broadcaster Kanal D from 2010 to 2012 . The main characters are Beren Saat , Engin Akgürek and Fırat Çelik.

The series is based on a true story that the author Vedat Türkali processed in a novel of the same name, which was filmed for Turkish cinema in 1986.

action

Fatmagül is an ordinary and humble village girl who is engaged to the fisherman Mustafa. She lives with her mentally retarded brother Rahmi and her sister-in-law Mukkades in a village near Izmir . Since Mustafa always leaves the village for several days due to his professional activity, Fatmagül wants to say goodbye to her fiancé and wave to him with his scarf, which is why she runs to the jetty before dawn, where the fishermen want to cast off.

At the same time, four young men (Erdogan, Selim, Vural and Kerim) are on a nearby beach and want to end Selim's engagement with alcohol and other drugs . Erdogan, Selim and Vural are sons of wealthy parents who now live in Istanbul and visit their parents' village on special occasions and on vacation. Kerim is a simple boy from this village whom you know from childhood. Fatmagül on her way to the jetty passes this beach and is stopped and raped by the men. Erdogan takes the first step, Selim and Vural follow him, Kerim just looks on and does not stop the men from doing their terrible deed.

The following day, Meryem finds Fatmagül lying on the beach and immediately takes her to the hospital. Meryem is the village healer who took in and raised Kerim after the suicide of Kerim's mother. At first the truth seems to come to light until Selim's uncle takes care of the matter; this is also a very clever lawyer. With a lot of money, the facts are covered up and rumors are deliberately spread that Fatmagül has cheated on Mustafa with Kerim for weeks and now regrets having slept with him. Since Fatmagül is traumatized by the events and at first cannot comment on the course of events and even after Mustafa's return does not get hold of anything, she more or less unintentionally falls victim to an intrigue : She is supposed to deny the rape and instead admit that she is having an affair with Kerim to have. Her sister-in-law also urges her to lie because she cares about the family's reputation and also gets good pay for it. As a result, Kerim allows himself to be persuaded by the rich families to take all the guilt and marry Fatmagül because of his mother's suicide in the past.

After all of this, the lives of Fatmagül, Kerim and Mustafa changed fundamentally. While Erdogan, Selim and Vural want to forget everything as quickly as possible, everyone deals with this guilt very differently. Kerim is badly troubled by his conscience, but can no longer remember the events of that night. Only Vural was the only one who saw that Kerim was not actively involved in the rape, but initially withholds this knowledge. But his conscience doesn't leave him in peace, which is why he later confesses the truth to Kerim.

In the meantime, Kerim and Fatmagül move with Rahmi, Mukkades and Fatmagül's nephews to Istanbul, where they are later joined by Ebe Nine, since a peaceful life in the village is no longer possible for them either. Since Fatmagül cannot deal with the past and has to look one of her rapists in the face every day (since Fatmagül passed out in the course of the rape, she also does not initially know that Kerim did not rap her), she always reacts very aggressively towards Kerim and suspicious. In the course of the series episodes, increasingly positive feelings for each other develop between the two, but Fatmagül cannot and does not want to admit these feelings, as it would be self-deception for her to forgive Kerim.

reception

The series, which was shown on the private broadcaster Kanal D, became the most successful Turkish series of the year in 2010. The first episode saw about a third of all Turkish viewers.

Karen Krüger, editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, criticized the series because, in contrast to the novel and the film, the main focus is not on the accusation of the rape victim, but on the rape itself. The broadcaster is now making the victim the guilty and transforming it Crimes in entertainment. The teasers are also designed for this, so they asked "Who are the rapists?", "Who plays the rape better, Beren or Hülya?" Or "Where will Beren be raped?" She also criticized the series' merchandising, so give There are Fatmagül sex dolls and a computer game with the title “Run, Fatmagül, run!”, with which one could re-enact the rape.

Turkish women's organizations and columnists also criticized the series for legitimizing the rape. Their demands to stop the series were unsuccessful.
