Life

Fatuma Adan was born in Marsabit in 1978. Her parents came from two different, warring ethnic groups from the Marsabit region of northern Kenya. After completing school, Adan studied law at Moi University in Eldoret and was then licensed to work as a lawyer.

Afterwards Adan returned to her hometown with the request to bring about peace and balance between the different population groups - Borana - Oromo , Gabbra and Rendille . In 2003 Adan founded the non-governmental organization “Horn of Africa Development Initiative” to promote peace and education in the area. As part of the NGO she founded, the project “Shoot to score, not to kill” (German: “Shoot to hit the goal, not to kill”) was created, with which she encourages young Kenyans to play football and moves away from the scene of conflict.

In January 2011 Adan received the Stuttgart Peace Prize with the “Shoot to score, not to kill” initiative . In 2013 the United Nations invited Adan to the “ Geneva Peace Talks ”, during which Adan was able to present the work of her initiative on the World Day of Peace .
