The Moi University is a university in Kenya , headquartered in the town of Eldoret . Her focus is on science and technology.

history

The university was founded in 1984 as the second oldest public university in the country after the University of Nairobi , during the tenure of Kenya's second president, Daniel Arap Moi , whose name it bears. In the first year it consisted only of the forestry department, which was spun off from the University of Nairobi, with 83 students. In 1996, Moi University opened the School of Medicine, the second institution of its kind in Kenya.

Around 150 people died in an attack on Garissa University College by the Somali al-Shabaab militia in April 2015.

Today (2015) the university is spread over eight campuses and consists of two constituent colleges . In 2007 the number of students was over 20,000. It is headed by Chancellor Miriam Were (since September 19, 2013) and Vice-Chancellor (Rector) Richard K. Mibey (since September 2006).

Former colleges: In 1990, an existing teacher training institution in Eldoret (Moi Teachers Training College) was initially incorporated into Moi University as the Chepkoilel Campus, upgraded to the constituent Chepkoilel College in August 2010 , but became an independent University of Eldoret in March 2013 . The Central Kenya Campus of Moi University in Karatina , established in 2007 , was promoted to Karatina College in 2010 and became an independent Karatina University in 2013 . The former Narok College of Moi University in Narok also became independent in 2013 under the name Maasai Mara University . The original Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (Weco) in Kakamega , later a college of Moi University, is now outsourced under the name Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust). Maseno University, founded in 2001 in the township of Maseno, was also a college of Moi University from 1991. The Kabianga Farmers Training Center became the Kabianga Campus of Moi University in 2007, upgraded to a college in 2009 and since 2013 legally independent as the University of Kabianga .
