Faustus von Riez , lat. Faustus Reiensis , Faustus de Rhegio (* beginning of the 5th century in Britain ; † around 495 ) was a Gallo-Roman abbot and bishop and an important theologian of the 5th century. He is a saint of the Catholic Church ; his feast day is September 28th.

Life

Faustus was a monk of the then flourishing Provencal island abbey Lerinum . In 433, barely 25 years old, he was elected abbot to succeed St. Maximus . His discipline and preaching gift are praised. Around 460 he became Bishop of Riez , again as Maximus' successor .

Faustus wrote important theological writings. Its position in the doctrine of grace is attributed to semipelagianism , since, contrary to an absolutized doctrine of predestination derived from Augustine's sentences , it represented human freedom of will in relation to salvation even after the fall of man . Some statements in his work De gratia Dei were condemned by the Synod of Orange in 529.

The Arian King of the Visigoths, Eurich, drove Faustus from his bishopric in 477. In 485, after Eurich's death, Faustus returned from exile. Soon after his death, the people venerated him as a saint. A church was built over his grave in Riez . He was friends with Ruricius of Limoges .
